Miasta w Australii: Cairns

Od pierwszego stąpnięcia na Australijskim kontynencie minęły dokładnie 3 tygodnie. Czas leci bardzo szybko. W dzisiejszym poście chciałabym Wam opowiedzieć troszkę o mieście Cairns, jakie są moje wrażenia, jakich ludzi możemy tutaj spotkać oraz jakie różnice między naszymi krajami rzuciły mi się najbardziej w oczy. Oczywiście nie chodzi o żadną krytykę. Każdy kraj i kultura są inne. Wszystko traktujcie z uśmiechem. :)

Exactly 3 weeks have passed since we first stepped on the Australian continent. Time flies very quickly. In today's post I would like to tell you a bit about the city of Cairns, what are my impressions, what people we can meet here and what differences between our countries hit me the most. Of course, this is not about any criticism. Each country and culture is different. Treat everything with a smile. :)

Troszkę o Cairns

Samo miasto nie jest stare, zostało założone w XIX w. jako miasto portowe. Znajduje się w północno-wschodniej części Australii więc panuje tutaj tropikalny klimat. To jest główny powód dlaczego zdecydowałam się przyjechać w czerwcu właśnie tutaj. Zima nie jest ani sroga ani straszna. Codziennie 25 - 27 st., a w nocy można spokojnie spać w samochodzie w letniej pidżamie. Region słynie także z produkcji cukru. Niedaleko miasta znajduje się duże połacie trzciny cukrowej, którą się wypala (dlatego jak widzi się dużo dymu to nie trzeba panikować - ogień jest kontrolowany).

Little bit about Cairns

The city itself is not old, it was founded in the 19th century as a port city. It is located in the north-eastern part of Australia so there is a tropical climate. That is the main reason why I decided to come here in June. Winter is neither harsh nor terrible. Every day between 25 and 27 degrees, and at night you can sleep peacefully in your car in the summer pajamas. The region is also famous for its sugar production. Near the city there is a large area of sugar cane, which is burned (so if you see a lot of smoke, you don't have to panic - the fire is controlled).

Turyści, turyści i jeszcze raz turyści

Cairns to zdecydowanie miasto turystyczne. Dużo hoteli, hosteli (recenzje naszych: Reef Bckp i CC Bckp) pubów, klubów, restauracji i agencji wycieczkowych. Jeżeli ktoś chce w czasie swojego urlopu wydać dużo pieniędzy to właśnie tutaj może to zrobić. Samo miasto nie jest drogie - zależy czego szukamy. Rozmawialiśmy dzisiaj z pewnym przechodniem, który powiedział, że miasto bardzo szybko się rozrosło i według niego, Cairns będzie tworem w stylu Gold Coast (nie byłam tam, ale wiem o co mu chodziło - zarabiać głównie na turystach). Przez to, że jednak nie jest to już małe miasteczko, nie czuje się, że jest w nim wiele turystów. Dla mnie jest jak najbardziej znośnie. Co więcej, powiedziałabym, że bardzo lubię Cairns za to jak jest proste. Wszystkie ulice są ułożone w kratkę. Bardzo szybko można poznać całe centrum pieszo i wszędzie jest blisko.

Turists, turists and again tourists

Cairns is definitely a tourist city. A lot of hotels, hostels (our reviews: Reef Bckp and CC Bckp), pubs, clubs, restaurants and tour operators. If you want to spend a lot of money during your holiday, this is where you can do it. The city itself is not expensive - it depends on what we are looking for. Today we talked to a passer-by who said that the city grew very fast and according to him, Cairns will be a Gold Coast-style creation (I wasn't there, but I know what he wanted - make money mainly from tourists). However, because it is no longer a small town, you don't feel that there are many tourists in it. For me, it is as tolerable as it can be. What's more, I would say that I really like Cairns for how simple it is. All streets are arranged in a grid. You can quickly get to know the entire centre on foot and everywhere is close.

Warto zobaczyć

Jestem nastawiona na naturę, a ta tutaj na pewno nikogo nie zawiedzie. Na samym początku podróży udałam się do biura turystycznego. Przemiły pracownik dał mi mapę Cairns oraz większą mapę okolic, na których pozaznaczał ciekawe miejsca do zwiedzania. Niektóre już widziałam (✓), inne jeszcze nie, dlatego bądźcie czujni na kolejne dawki tropikalnych zdjęć za niedługo i kolejne posty (🔜)!

Worth to see

I am oriented towards nature, and this one will certainly not disappoint anyone here. At the very beginning of the journey I went to a travel agency. A nice employee gave me a map of Cairns and a bigger map of the surroundings, on which he marked interesting places to visit. Some I have already seen (✓), others have not, so be ready to the next doses of tropical photos soon and the next posts (🔜)!

Jesteś głodny? Jest w czym wybierać, ale szczególną uwagę należy zwrócić ku P.J.O'Brien's. Jeżeli zamieszkacie w konkretnych hostelach lub pójdziecie do biura turystycznego warto zapytać się czy mają do nich kupony promocyjne. W godzinach od 16 do 21, za 10$ dostaniemy porządny obiad i wybrane piwo lub domowe wino. Jeden kupon jest na jedną osobę. Szczerze polecam! Poza tym mają bardzo ciekawy system obsługi (już kilka razy się z tym spotkałam tutaj w innych restauracjach). Dostaje się urządzenie, które, jak danie jest gotowe, zaczyna wibrować i świecić jak szalone. :)

Something to eat 
Are you hungry? There is plenty restaurants to choose from, but special attention should be paid to P. J. O'Brien's. If you live in specific hostels or go to a travel agency it is worth asking if they have promotional coupons. From 16:00 to 21:00, for $10:00 you will have a good lunch and a selection of beer or homemade wine. One coupon per person. I sincerely recommend it! Besides, they have a very interesting service system (I have met this several times here in other restaurants). You get a device that, as the dish is ready, starts to vibrate and shine like crazy. :)

Autobusy i parking

Jeżeli ktoś nie ma samochodu to łatwo może dostać się do najbliższych plaż autobusem. Koszt takiego przejazdu waha się między 3 - 4$. Jeżdżą one często, ale trzeba zwracać uwagę o której jedzie ostatni autobus do miasta. Ja prawie przegapiłam ostatni (a była dopiero 17:30!). Trzeba również pamiętać o machnięciu ręką bo inaczej mogą się nie zatrzymać na naszym przystanku. Jeżeli mamy samochód to wszędzie wydaje się blisko. Parking jest oczywiście płatny w samym centrum jednak wolne miejsca nie znajdują się daleko. Cena to z reguły 1,40$ za 1 godzinę. Miejsc jest dużo więc nawet w dzień nie mieliśmy dużego problemu żeby coś znaleźć. 
Poza tym, jeżeli już mówimy o ruchu drogowym, światła dla pieszych wyglądają tak, że zielone jest tylko przez kilka sekund i od razu pojawia się czerwone z odliczanymi sekundami powyżej (nadal mamy czas na przejście) lub czerwone, które miga prze jakiś czas.

Buses and Parking
If you don't have a car, it's easy to get to the nearest beaches by bus. The cost of such a journey varies between $3 and $4. They travel frequently but you need to pay attention which bus goes to the city. I almost missed the last one (it was 17:30!). You should also remember to wave your hand, otherwise they may not stop at our bus stop. If you have a car, everywhere seems to be close. Parking is paid in the city centre, but there are no parking spaces far away. The price is usually $1. 40 per hour. There is a lot of space even during the day, we didn't have a big problem to find something.

In addition, if I am already talking about traffic, the pedestrian lights are green for only a few seconds, and directly after they are red with the countdown seconds above (we still have time to go) or red, which flashes for a while.

Subiektywnym okiem

Jak już wcześniej wspomniałam, bardzo lubię i dobrze się czuję w Cairns. Ludzie są tutaj bardzo przyjaźni, nie ma problemu żeby z porozmawiać z kimś obcym na ulicy. Mimo, że jest to turystyczne miasto to nie czuję się tym aż tłamszona jak np. czułam się w Port Douglas. Jedynym minusem jest dla mnie fakt braku prawdziwej plaży. W tym okresie morze jest bardzo daleko, a rozmiar plaży jest bardzo niewielki. I może jeszcze fakt braku większych przedsiębiorstw czy produkcji ponieważ to zabiera duże pole do znalezienia pracy, chyba że ktoś idealnie odnajduje się w restauracji czy przy barze i posiada do tego odpowiednie certyfikaty. Agencje pracy nie były za bardzo zainteresowane naszymi CV (tylko Hays), szukały profesjonalistów, a nie pracy tymczasowej. W jednej nawet na drzwiach napisane było, że nie mogą pomagać osobom z Work and Holiday visa. Oczywiście na tym nie poprzestaję, ale o tym to już więcej w przyszłym poście. 😎

Subjective eye
As I said before, I really like and feel good in Cairns. People are very friendly here, there is no problem with talking to someone on the street. Although it is a tourist town, I don't feel as overwhelmed as I felt in Port Douglas. The only disadvantage for me is the lack of a real beach. During this period the sea is very far away and the size of the beach is very small. And maybe there is also a lack of bigger companies or manufactures because we have less work posibilities like that, unless someone is happy to work in a restaurant or bar and has the appropriate certificates to do so. Employment agencies were not very interested in our CV (only Hays), they were looking for professionals and not temporary work. In one of them it was written on the door that they could not help people with Work and Holiday visa. Of course I don't stop there, but that's more about next fast. 😎
